About 7 months ago I was fed up of my periods. Every single month I was crippled over with pain with no medical cause known and I’d had enough. I’d heard of menstrual cups before and read how beneficial they are, not only for the environment, but also for your vaginal health. With some studies also showing they can reduce period pain, I decided to bin the tampons and try it out.
A Bit About Menstrual Cups and the Negatives of Tampons
After having used tampons for almost 20 years of my life, I’d heard a number of negative facts about them.
They are made with chemicals that are linked to health risks that include chlorine and pesticides
Mix that with something that extremely absorbent (your vagina), means that putting something that is full of harsh and alien substances will be very easily into your blood stream. Pesticides and chlorine are probably not the best things to be putting in to your vag!
They Dry You Out
As mentioned above, the vagina is extremely absorbent. Tampons are designed to soak up blood to stop it from leaking out. It’s only going to dry you all out up there which can then bring on infections. Not good. Also, it makes sense with regards to period pain. Something that soaks up moisture which should naturally all empty out causing the uterus to contract more and as such produce more cramping.
Tampons and feminine hygiene products have a serious impact on the environment
The average woman uses 11,000 – 16,000 tampons in her life time. These all end up on landfill and those tampons with plastic applicators don’t biodegrade easily.
They can cause Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS)
This is very rare but it’s still a very real possibility.
