Hello everyone! Welcome to my blog….
This is my very first post so I thought I would write about what I got up to for my birthday. The other week brought my 32nd celebration and my husband treated me to a couple of days in London. The weekend was a sunny one so we spent as much time as possible outside. Basking in the sunshine and soaking up as much vitamin D as we could was definitely a bonus for a January birthday!
A hotel by the water
We stayed on the Southbank in the CitizenM Hotel Bankside which I couldn’t fault. After staying at CitizenM New York for our trip last year, we wanted to experience it again in the capital. Check-in is super easy. It is all electronic on touch screen where you create your own room key. Then it’s up in the elevator and into the room. The rooms in all Citizen M hotels are laid out exactly the same and all include a floor to bed window. The bed is so huge and comfortable it practically takes up half of the room. The compact bathroom facilities are perfect. It’s simple, practical and very affordable.
International Women’s March
The day we went up there happened to be the day of the International Women’s March, and although we missed marching through the streets we were able to catch a bit of the rally in Trafalger Square which was an incredible atmosphere. It was very peaceful, inspiring and generated the most amazing commaradory spirit.
My favourite food
We caught an early dinner at Dishoom, Covent Garden where we feasted on Vegetable Samosas, Cheese Naan, A Bowl of Greens, Paneer Tikka, Raita and their signature dish (and a’must order’) Black House Daal. (Mark decided on Lamb Boti Kebabs). The food was delicious, the service excellent and the atmosphere which all made it into the perfect place to start our evening.
After a brilliant performance of Matilda at the Cambridge Theatre, we were thankful for the huge double bed to rest our weary heads after a full day.
A Beautiful Lunch
Sunday, and my actual birthday – another amazing sunny day and another lovely surprise in store. Mark had booked us a table at ‘The World’s Most Romantic Restaurant’ Clos Maggiore. From the moment we arrived, to the moment we left we were treated like royalty. We were given one of the best tables in the house and in the place that is most sought after in the restaurant. The Conservatory. We were surrounded by an abundance of white cherry blossoms and next to a roaring fire. This made the atmosphere seem even more romantic.
We decided to go for the 3 course weekend set menu. For my starter I opted for the Confit & Chargrilled Sicilian Aubergine with Sweet Peppers & Corsican Ricotta. This was accompanied by Crispy Seeded Flat Bread & Onion Jam. Melt-in-you-mouth delicious. I followed this with the Hand Rolled Fresh Pappardella, Grated Fresh Truffle Seasonal Wild Mushrooms & Parmesan Reggiano, Truffle Sauce for my main course. So good.
The husband went for the Hand Picked Dorset Crab with Celeriac Rémoulade to start. The Oven Roasted Iberico Pork Fillet with Petits Pois à la Française and Alsace Bacon Sauce for his main course. Too full up to each have a dessert so we chose to share some of their home made vanilla ice-cream. Simple but delicious.
After a walk back to the hotel, we headed home with full bellies and the best feeling of contentment.
London is my favourite city (New York closely follows). There is just so much to see and do up there. I just need to find an excuse to go back to London for another weekend away!
